Jerónimos Monastery: frequently asked questions

Is this the official Jerónimos Monastery website?

No. Jerónimos Monastery Visit is an independent visitor guide. The official information is on the monument’s website and on the pages of the public body that manages it. We do not run the monument. The tickets and tours featured here are sold by our partner Tiqets, a third party, not by the monument.

What are the opening hours? Is it open on Mondays?

The cloister is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 17:30, with the last entry at 17:00 and the ticket kiosk closing at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays, on 1 January, on Easter Sunday, on 1 May, on 13 June and on 25 December. For 24 and 31 December the monument has published nothing. Hours read on 24 October 2026.

Who enters free, and are there reduced tickets?

Children up to 12 enter free, and residents in Portugal enter free on 52 days a year of their choice (Acesso 52), with ID. Reduced rates exist for ages 13 to 24 and over 65, and for families, whose tickets are sold only at the kiosk in front of the monument. Visitors with a certified disability of 60% or more and one companion enter free. Rates and the proof you need are on the monument’s website. Prices of the tickets and tours sold here are on the cards.

Do I need to book in advance? Can I buy on the day?

The ticket is for a set day and time slot, and the monument writes that slots often sell out, and then they cannot be bought on the same day. It advises buying ahead on the online ticket office. A physical kiosk in front of the monument also sells tickets and closes at 16:30. The online ticket office warns that in busy periods queues can exceed 2 hours.

How long is the queue?

We cannot say. The only official figure is the warning on the online ticket office that, in busy periods, entry queues can in some cases exceed 2 hours. Buying ahead, choosing a slot and arriving early is the best you can do; we found no priority line for individual visitors in the official pages.

Is the church free? Does it need a ticket?

The church of Santa Maria de Belém is free, according to the regulation, but the management can limit entries when crowds are exceptional. Its hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10:30-17:00, Sunday and religious holidays 14:00-17:00. The ticket is for the cloister. We could not read where the church entrance is or whether it has a separate queue.

Is it free on Sundays? Who enters free?

The official pages list no free Sundays; the old regime of free Sundays and holidays was replaced on 1 August 2024. Children up to 12 enter free, and residents in Portugal enter free on 52 days a year of their choice (Acesso 52), with ID. The regulation also lists 18 April, 18 May and the European Heritage Days in September as free for everyone, but we could not confirm them for 2027.

Is there a combined ticket with Belém Tower?

We found no combined ticket with the Tower on the monument’s own pages. Our partner sells a ticket with two entries, the Tower and the monastery, and the Lisboa Card also covers both; both are on the cards of the tickets page. The tower has its own slots.

Is there an audio guide?

No: the monument says it provides no audio guides or audio systems. The Tiqets ticket with the Tower includes a general audio guide app for Lisbon, which is not a guide to the monastery.

Can I take a backpack inside? Food, photos, dogs?

Suitcases, trolleys and large backpacks are not allowed, and we could not read the maximum size. We found no mention of a cloakroom. Food and drink are not allowed. Photos are allowed without flash, with non-professional equipment and for personal use; selfie sticks and tripods are not. Dogs are not allowed, except assistance dogs.

Is the monastery accessible by wheelchair?

The ground floor of the cloister and the church are accessible, but the first floor of the cloister is not, and pushchairs and wheelchairs are not allowed there, according to the monument. A wheelchair and portable stools can be borrowed. Visitors with a certified disability of 60% or more and one companion enter free.

Is the National Museum of Archaeology open?

No. The museum, in the same building, is closed for refurbishment, according to Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, and no reopening date is given. It is not included in the cloister ticket. The Maritime Museum, in the same building, is run by a separate body.

Is the ticket in my name? Can I change or cancel it?

The official pages we read do not say whether tickets carry a name; the Acesso 52 free ticket requires an ID at entry. On changes, the ticket office’s general conditions say sales are final, while its ticket page offers rescheduling with 24 hours’ notice: the two texts disagree. The Tiqets entry ticket is not refundable according to Tiqets.

How do I get there from the centre of Lisbon?

By tram 15E (stop Mosteiro Jerónimos), by Carris bus 714, 727, 728, 729 or 751, or by the CP train from Cais do Sodré to Belém station, about 8 minutes, then about 940 m on foot. There is no metro station in Belém.
